In a dramatic turn of events at its ongoing 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled several high-profile members, including Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, and nine others, for alleged anti-party activities.

The decision, ratified by an overwhelming majority of delegates at the Adamasingba Stadium, marks a significant escalation in the party’s efforts to restore unity and discipline ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The full list of expelled members includes:

– HE. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON (FCT Minister)

– HE. Ayo Fayose (Former Ekiti State Governor)

– Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Former PDP National Secretary)

– Hon. Umar Bature

– Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN (Former National Legal Adviser)

– Mohammed Abdulrahman

– Senator Mao Ohuabunwa

– Hon. Austine Nwachukwu

– Abraham Amah

– George Turner

– Chief Dan Orbih

The motion for their expulsion was moved by Chief Olabode George, a prominent PDP leader and the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, amid wild jubilation from party faithful present at the convention.

The PDP leadership cited breaches of the party’s constitution, including anti-party activities such as supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, during the 2023 general elections, as the primary reason for the expulsions. The party described the move as a “landmark decision” to eradicate internal divisions that have hampered its progress.

The expulsion of Wike, a former Rivers State Governor and a key figure in the PDP’s internal power struggles, has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape.

Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister under President Tinubu’s APC-led administration, despite remaining a PDP member, had already fueled tensions within the opposition party. Similarly, Fayose, known for his outspoken criticism of PDP leadership since the 2022 presidential primaries, has been a polarizing figure whose expulsion was widely anticipated.

The convention proceeded despite conflicting court orders, with a Federal High Court in Abuja previously restraining the PDP from holding the event, while an Oyo State court upheld its legality.

This legal tussle underscores the deep-seated factionalism within the party, pitting Wike’s loyalists against the Makinde-led group and the party’s National Working Committee.

As details continue to emerge, the expelled members have yet to issue official statements, but sources suggest Wike may retaliate, potentially exacerbating the PDP’s fragmentation. The party’s ability to unify and present a formidable opposition to the ruling APC in 2027 now hangs in the balance.

More updates will follow as the situation develops.
