In a swift move signaling continuity amid transformation, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has appointed Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Humaid as its new Grand Mufti and Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars, just one day after the death of his predecessor, the venerable Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Asheikh.
The royal decree, issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, underscores the monarchy’s commitment to upholding Islamic scholarship as the nation navigates Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s ambitious Vision 2030 reforms.
Sheikh Saleh, 76, a seasoned jurist and member of the Al ash-Sheikh family—descendants of the 18th-century founder of Wahhabism—brings decades of experience from his roles as Imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and advisor to the royal court.
Unlike his ultraconservative predecessor, who steered the kingdom through seismic social shifts like women’s driving rights and entertainment liberalization, Sheikh Saleh is known for pragmatic fatwas blending tradition with modernity, including endorsements of interfaith dialogue and economic diversification.
The announcement follows widespread funeral prayers for Sheikh Abdulaziz, held in absentia across the kingdom’s mosques on Tuesday, drawing condolences from global leaders.
“This transition ensures the flame of scholarly wisdom endures,” said a royal statement, as Saudi Arabia balances its role as Sunni Islam’s guardian with progressive strides.
