Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
A few hours after the Supreme Court prohibited the Federal Government from enforcing the deadline for old naira notes swap, the meeting was convened.
The CBN, which oversaw the naira’s redesign, set a deadline for the old notes to cease being legal money on January 31.
However, the apex bank and government were put under a lot of pressure, and the deadline was moved to February 10.
Emefiele stated last week that the apex bank was not thinking about extending the deadline.
President Buhari had a meeting with the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to discuss the matter, and he requested them to give him seven days to look into it.
But in order to challenge the CBN, the governments of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara states went to court.
A seven-member panel presided over by Justice John Okoro issued a decision on Wednesday stopping the Federal Government’s action.
Prior to the top court’s February 15 decision on the motion, the highest court ordered commercial banks and other financial institutions to continue operating using the old notes.
