President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri as “Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri” in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked sharp criticism from academic and political circles, with Dr. Umar Ardo, a prominent scholar, labeling the move as “ill-advised” and “conceptually misplaced.”

In a scathing critique, Dr. Ardo argued that the decision lacks intellectual, cultural, and moral grounding. He emphasized that Buhari, a career military officer and politician, had no significant connection to academia or educational policy, making the renaming of a university—a symbol of learning and intellectualism—an inappropriate tribute.

“Buhari’s legacy is rooted in his military career and presidency, not in scholarship or education. Naming a university after him dilutes its identity and purpose,” Ardo stated.

The University of Maiduguri, located in Borno State, is one of seven federal universities established in 1975 by General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, whose transformative leadership expanded access to tertiary education in Nigeria.

To overlook Murtala, who founded these institutions, and instead name one after Buhari, who did not significantly reform higher education, is a distortion of historical credit

Dr. Ardo argued that Murtala, whose contributions to education and nation-building are undeniable, would have been a more fitting figure to honor with such a gesture.

“To overlook Murtala, who founded these institutions, and instead name one after Buhari, who did not significantly reform higher education, is a distortion of historical credit,” he said.

Ardo further questioned the geographical and cultural relevance of the decision, noting that Buhari, a native of Katsina in the North-West, had no direct ties to the University of Maiduguri or Borno State.

He suggested that the renaming disregards local heroes and educational pioneers from the region who could better represent the institution’s identity. “The decision feels arbitrary, lacking emotional or cultural resonance with the host community,” he added.

The scholar proposed alternative ways to honor Buhari, such as naming a military academy, rural development institute, or a public structure in Katsina after him, which would align more closely with his legacy and contributions.

“Honoring public figures must be proportionate, culturally sensitive, and relevant to the institution in question,” Ardo argued, warning against the politicization of educational institutions.

Universities should be beacons of critical inquiry, not memorials to transient political figures whose legacies remain contested

Dr. Ardo’s critique also raised broader concerns about the Tinubu administration’s approach to renaming national monuments, accusing it of prioritizing political patronage over historical justice and institutional integrity.

“Universities should be beacons of critical inquiry, not memorials to transient political figures whose legacies remain contested,” he said.

The decision has sparked a wider debate, with many calling for a more principled and thoughtful approach to immortalizing Nigeria’s leaders. Critics argue that such gestures should inspire future generations and reflect the true spirit of the institutions involved.

As the controversy unfolds, the renaming of the University of Maiduguri remains a contentious issue, highlighting the delicate balance between honoring national figures and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s educational heritage.
