Burna, Olamide, Asake, Other Nigerian Stars Dominate Barack Obama’s 2025 Favourite Music Playlist

In a nod to the global rise of Afrobeats and Nigerian talent, former U.S. President Barack Obama has included several standout tracks from Nigerian artists in his highly anticipated 2025 favorite music list, released today.

The annual playlist showcases Obama’s eclectic taste, blending genres from hip-hop to indie rock, but this year’s edition puts a spotlight on Nigeria’s vibrant music scene, which continues to influence international charts and cultural conversations.

The list features prominent Nigerian acts, underscoring the country’s dominance in global music exports. Leading the charge is Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy with “TATATA,” a collaboration with American rapper Travis Scott.

Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu in Port Harcourt, has long been a favorite of Obama’s, appearing on previous lists with hits like “Ye” and “Last Last.” This latest inclusion cements his status as a bridge between African sounds and Western audiences, with “TATATA” blending high-energy Afrobeats rhythms with Scott’s signature trap elements.

Another major highlight is “99” by Olamide, featuring Daecolm, Seyi Vibez, Asake, and Young Jonn – a powerhouse all-Nigerian lineup that represents the new wave of Afrobeats and street-hop.

Olamide, often called the “Baddo” of Nigerian music, hails from Bariga in Lagos and has mentored many rising stars, including Asake, whose global breakthrough came with albums like Mr. Money with the Vibe.

Seyi Vibez and Young Jonn, both Lagos natives, add layers of melodic Yoruba-infused vibes, making “99” a celebration of Nigerian youth culture and resilience. This track’s presence on Obama’s list is seen as a boost for Nigeria’s music industry, which generated over $200 million in revenue in 2024, according to industry reports.

Adding to the Nigerian flair is “Not in Surrender” by Obongjayar, a Nigerian-born, London-based artist known for his genre-defying blend of soul, electronic, and traditional African influences.

Raised in Calabar, Obongjayar’s music often explores themes of identity and migration, resonating with Obama’s own appreciation for diverse narratives.

Obama’s 2025 list, titled “Barack Obama’s Favorite Music,” includes 28 tracks spanning artists from Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK to Bruce Springsteen and Drake.

While diverse, the Nigerian entries stand out for their energy and innovation, reflecting the former president’s ongoing support for African creativity – a theme evident in his post-presidency work through the Obama Foundation, which has partnered with African leaders on youth empowerment initiatives.
