CAN Stages Peaceful Protest in Plateau Over Killings of Christians

The Plateau State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) took to the streets of Jos on Monday in a powerful yet peaceful demonstration, voicing outrage over the relentless killings of Christians in the region.

The protest, which drew significant attention, underscored the growing unrest among Christian communities amid escalating violence.

Led by CAN State Chairman Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo, the procession began at 9:43 a.m. from Favwei Junction, winding its way through the city before concluding at the New Government House in Little Rayfield.

The march was marked by a unified call for action, with participants urging authorities to address the bloodshed that has plagued the state.

Speaking at the Government House, Rev. Fr. Lubo, joined by the President of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), delivered an impassioned plea to the Plateau State Government. They urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to relay their grievances directly to President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the need for national intervention.

“This protest is a cry for help,” Rev. Fr. Lubo declared. “The Christian community in Plateau cannot continue to live under the shadow of violence. We need the nation to hear us.”

The demonstration was sparked by a recent wave of attacks targeting Christian populations in the state, a crisis that CAN leaders say has reached intolerable levels. The protesters’ message was clear: immediate action is required to halt the killings and restore peace.

In response, Governor Mutfwang addressed the crowd, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to protecting all citizens. “The safety of lives and property remains our top priority,” he assured. He revealed that the Inspector General of Police has pledged to bolster security in Plateau by deploying additional personnel to curb the unrest. The governor’s words offered a glimmer of hope to the demonstrators, who presented him with a formal letter of protest for transmission to the President.
