The Chairman, Investments and Securities Tribunal, Amos Azi Esq
has said the integrity of the capital Market is key to investment safety with a charge on members to strive for distinction in serving the interests of investors .
According to him, upholding the integrity of the capital Capital market is key to safety of investment.
Speaking at the opening of a 3 Day Annual Retreat for members of the Tribunal in Kaduna on Monday, Amos Azi said the retreat would provide an avenue for them to reflect on their journey so far in their roles as adjudicators.
While welcoming participants to the three-day 2024 annual retreat of the Investments and Securities Tribunal with the theme: “Value Addition to IST through Legal Research, Reasoning and Entrepreneurial Skills”,he stated,”We are opportune by this gathering to reflect on our journey so far in our roles as adjudicators, recommit to greater commitment in our service delivery, whilst invigorating our passion for sustaining investors’ confidence in our Capital Market through justice delivery.Legal research, reasoning, and entrepreneurial skills are undoubtedly the very foundations for the effectiveness of the Tribunal’s operations.”
He explained: “Legal research skills are essential for Tribunal members to conduct thorough, well-informed, and fair decision-making processes. By investing in legal research skills, Tribunal members can enhance the quality and credibility of their decisions, uphold the principles of justice, and contribute to the effective functioning of the Tribunal.Accordingly in our pursuit of justice and fairness, it is imperative that we stay abreast of the latest legal developments and hone our analytical abilities. By honing our legal reasoning skills through research, we can ensure that our decisions are logical, coherent, and legally sound.”
“The deliberate inclusion of entrepreneurial skills in this retreat is in recognition of the fact that save for two Members all other Members would be completing their two tenures by the third quarter of 2025. Accordingly the entrepreneurial skills to be considered at the retreat is one that will be relevant at enhancing our capacities and competences both as serving and retiring Members as well as in a possible political appointment, or as we continue to engage in productive activities that add value to the society while retired.”
“The objective of the retreat is two-fold as follows:Capacity Building for Members of the IST to add value to the Tribunal and for their personal Success and Development; And reflect on Developments at the IST and plan for the Future towards Promotion of the Mandate of the Tribunal.”
“Accordingly in the course of the retreat we shall be having two paper presentations on the first and second days to wit:Legal Research and Reasoning for Courts and Tribunals with Reference to Investments and Securities Tribunal: By Professor Rabiu Sani Shatsari of the Department of Public Law, Bayero University Kano (BUK).Entrepreneurship Skills for Serving and Retired Political Appointees with Focus on Soft Skills for Judges: By Professor Abdullahi Muhammed of the Department of Public Administration of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK)Day 3 will be a round table discussion on the following:Points and Lessons from the presentations on the previous day, the 16th and 17th December 2024Improving the Operations, Processes and Structures of ISTCase-Management to discuss issues that include:Improvement on the Achievement of the Overriding Objectives of the Procedure Rules of the Tribunal consistency in the IST decisions unless there is compelling reason to Depart development of Practice Direction to effect issues agreed upon.”
“The retreat is structured to incorporate some recreational activities like sports, site seeing and other relaxation activities such as courtesy visit on key stakeholders in the state as part of the efforts of the Tribunal at promoting collaboration and partnership.
It is my expectations that, together, we will emerge from this retreat with renewed energy, fresh insights, and a shared commitment to excellence. Let us therefore make the most of this retreat as we continue to strive for distinction in serving the interests of investors and upholding the integrity of the securities market,” he said.
While on a courtesy visit to the office of the Chief Judge at the Kaduna High Court of Justice, Hon.Justice Muhammad TM Aliyu, Amos Azi who was accompanied by his members, explained the workings and strides of the Tribunal to their host,and assured of a mutually beneficial relationship with the judiciary in Kaduna State.
