Catholic Priest Killed by Suspected Bandits in Kaduna

In a tragic and shocking incident, Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, a Catholic priest serving at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tachiri, Kaura Local Government Area, was brutally killed by suspected bandits. The priest’s lifeless body was discovered early this morning, sending waves of grief and outrage through the local community and beyond.

According to sources within the church and local residents, Father Okechukwu was abducted from his residence late Tuesday night by armed assailants believed to be bandits operating in the region.

The attackers reportedly stormed his home under the cover of darkness, forcibly taking him before fleeing into the surrounding bushland. Despite efforts by community members to raise the alarm, the priest’s fate remained uncertain until his body was found hours later.

The discovery of Father Okechukwu’s remains has intensified concerns over the escalating insecurity in Kaduna State, where banditry, kidnappings, and targeted killings have plagued rural communities for years.

Preliminary reports suggest the priest may have been killed shortly after his abduction, though authorities have yet to confirm the precise cause of death or the motive behind the attack.

The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, under which St. Mary’s Church falls, has not yet released an official statement, but sources indicate that church leaders are working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.

The Kaduna State Police Command has deployed officers to the area, though no arrests have been reported at the time of writing.

This killing marks yet another attack on religious figures in Nigeria’s volatile northwest, where armed groups have increasingly targeted clergy and places of worship. The region has seen a surge in violence, with bandits often demanding ransoms or using abductions as leverage against communities and authorities.

Just last month, similar incidents were reported in neighboring states, underscoring the growing threat to both civilians and religious leaders.
