The Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) is mourning the loss of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away today in a London hospital. The African anti-corruption community joins Nigeria in grieving a transformative leader whose dedication to integrity and accountability revolutionized the nation’s forensic and fraud investigation landscape.

In a heartfelt press statement, Dr. Yerima Iliyasu B. Gashinbaki, Founder/Pioneer President and Chairman of CIFCFIN’s Governing Council, lauded President Buhari as the “Grand Pa of Forensics in Nigeria,” a title earned through his monumental contributions to the fight against corruption.
On May 22, 2022, during a historic courtesy visit by CIFCFIN’s Governing Council to the State House, Buhari was honored with the Institute’s Global Integrity and Anti-Corruption Award of Excellence, a prestigious accolade reserved exclusively for African Heads of State.
True to his commitment, on December 23, 2022, President Buhari granted Presidential Assent to the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2022.
His vision and decisive action laid the foundation for a new era of transparency and justice
This landmark legislation, hailed as the most significant advancement in forensic and fraud investigation since the Audit Ordinance of 1956, established CIFCFIN as Nigeria’s sole statutorily chartered body to regulate and advance forensic science and fraud investigation.
The Act empowered the Institute to establish forensic laboratories, develop professional training programs, and create regulatory frameworks, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to combat fraud, cybercrime, and financial malfeasance.
“President Buhari’s belief in forensic science as a tool for accountability was unwavering,” Dr. Gashinbaki stated. “His vision and decisive action laid the foundation for a new era of transparency and justice.”
His contributions will forever illuminate the path toward a just and transparent Nigeria
In recognition of his enduring impact, CIFCFIN inducted President Buhari into its Hall of Fame during the 2024 Founders’ Day Celebration, cementing his legacy as a pillar of ethical leadership. His passing is a profound loss not only to Nigeria but to the global anti-corruption community.
CIFCFIN extends its deepest condolences to President Buhari’s family, the Government and People of Katsina State, and all forensic and fraud investigation professionals. “His contributions will forever illuminate the path toward a just and transparent Nigeria,” Dr. Gashinbaki added.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
