A 28-year-old woman and her two young children are battling severe burns after they were allegedly doused with petrol and set on fire by the woman’s co-wife in the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.

The gruesome incident occurred late Monday night at Mai Allo quarters in Hotoro. The suspect, identified as Maryam Muhammad, is currently in police custody at the Mariri Police Division.
The victims Firdausi Musa, her daughter Khadija Ya’u (7), and son Ismail Ya’u (3) are receiving treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, and Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano. Their father, Malam Saminu, a commercial tricycle rider, also sustained burns while attempting to rescue his family from the flames.
According to family members, Firdausi had spent less than two weeks in the matrimonial home before the attack. The two children were from her previous marriage, making them stepchildren to Malam Saminu.
A younger brother of the victim, Buhari Musa Sa’ad, told Daily Trust that the family received a distress call around 3am on Tuesday informing them of the incident.
Another relative, Rukayya, revealed that Firdausi had earlier complained of repeated threats and intimidation from her co-wife. She had temporarily left the house on Monday due to the threats but returned after her husband intervened.
The victim reportedly told relatives that her co-wife poured petrol on her and the children before lighting a match.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The case has sparked widespread shock and outrage among residents of the area. Investigations are ongoing.
