The collapse of the of a critical link bridge at Lafiya Lamurde on the Yola-Gombe on saturday has prompted a distress call to the Federal Government by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The Governor who made the call amidst cheers from stranded commuters had earlier made His concerns known to the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Works, describing the latest incidence as a major challenge to inter State transportation and Commerce. The severity of the ATM Governor’s concern was demonstrated by the presence at the site of the Deputy Governor Chief Crowther Seth and Chief of Staff Government House, Yola Professor Maxwell Gidado among top government functionaries.
To compound the distress, the Lafiya Bride is on a busy route that links Adamawa and Gombe States among others in terms of commercial activities.
Governor Umaru Fintiri observed with dismay the deplorable condition of Gombe-Yola road and called on the federal government to rearward the contract to a competent contractor for speedy completion of the road.
He asked the people especially motorists plying the road, to exercise patience and perseverance as the government is fully committed to addressing the problem.
The bridge in Lafiya Lamurde collapsed on Saturday as a result of a heavy down pour in the area cutting off access by motorists on the busy federal high way.
Motorists coming from Gombe to Yola had make a detour through Lamurde to Gyawana for easy access to Yola and other parts of the country.
As at the time of the visit heavy duty vehicles fully loaded with goods were stranded on either side of the collapsed bridge but the sight of the Governor, lifted their spirit and the hope a prompt albeit temporary solution to the problem.
