..... says Lagu must vacate office and accuses ASUU, and others of supporting the illegality

A concerned citizen, Yakubu Isa said the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Adamawa State University (ADSU) Mubi, Dr. Stephen Lagu should vacate office with immediate effect.

Isa said Lagu’s stay in office as acting has violated the act that established the university and therefore occupied the office illegally.

According to him, Lagu has been on the seat in acting capacity for over one year and five months, since January 2023 and the provision for anyone to be in acting capacity is only for six months as stated in the act establishing the university.

Isa while Chronicling the leadership of the institution since its inception in 2002 said the transition from Prof. Ghaji, Prof. Kwaga, Prof. Alkasum Abba, Prof. David Shall, Dr. Moses Zaruwa, Kaleptawa Farauta George and now Dr. Stephen Lagu there has never been anyone in the seat on acting capacity for over one year five months.

He said the vacancy created by Prof Kaleptawa Farauta George as a result of her appointment as the current Deputy Governor of Adamawa State on 1st January 2023 was the epicenter that opened the door for Lagu’s illegal current position.

Isa fingered the Deputy Governor as the brain behind Lagu’s undue privilege of the VC position that according to him violated norms establishing the university norms that stressed the need for a Professor to occupy the seat.

He accused the ADSU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of being a sycophant and unreliable group who in 2017 fought the appointment of Dr. Moses Zaruwa when he was appointed the Vice Chancellor for not being a Professor.

He worried that ASUU fought Moses to the extent of the then State Government under the leadership of Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla Bindow removing him and appointing Prof. Kaletapwa Frauta as Vice Chancellor but the union remained mute and became toothless dogs shielding and aiding the illegal appointment of favor of Lagu who is not a professor.

Isa revealed that in his investigation on the matter, he stumbled an information on the University website that the Ag. Vice Chancellor (Dr. Stephen Lagu) was born on 4th June 1959 at Gulak which indicates that he will be 65 years old by 3rd June 2024.

To him, Isa, Lagu by the current University Laws and schemes of service in operation is due for retirement clocking the age of sixty-five because is not a confirmed Professor.

He revealed this information Shall there be any attempts to change biodata or any data to tarry longer than necessary in the office or as a civil servant.

“There are moves by the Ag. Vice-chancellor to smuggle in a new scheme of service at the next University Governing Council meeting to alter the retirement age, academic rank for vice chancellors’ appointment to elongate his illegal stay in office.” Isa alleged

While alleging Lagu’s move to stay longer than the provision of the Law, he called on the University Visitor, the University Governing Council, and all other stakeholders to act fast and promptly in salvaging the University as there are people close to the power that distort the University governing System and it will affect badly the entire Education system.

Our correspondent contacted Dr. Lagu to clear the air about some of the allegations, he outrightly said:

“I’m not the one that appointed myself. All I know my appointment follows due process by the university governing council.

“Until a new Vice-Chancellor is in place before I can vacate the office.”
