The Federal High Court in Abuja has revoked the bail earlier granted to former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, and issued a warrant for his arrest over his failure to appear in court.

The decision was made in connection with the cybercrime charges filed against Sowore by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Sowore is being prosecuted over a social media post in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “a criminal.”

At the previous hearing, Sowore informed the court that he would be conducting his own defence, claiming that his legal representatives were unwilling to continue appearing before Justice Mohammed Umar.

The activist also sought the reassignment of the case to another judge, alleging bias on the part of Justice Umar and requesting that the judge recuse himself from further proceedings.

However, following Sowore’s absence at the latest court session, the court revoked his bail and ordered his arrest.

The case has attracted public attention due to its implications for freedom of expression, political criticism, and the application of cybercrime laws in Nigeria.

Further proceedings are expected after the execution of the arrest warrant and Sowore’s appearance before the court.
