Critics Question Sultan of Sokoto’s Silence After Alleged Security Operation

Public debate has intensified over the continued silence of the Sultan of Sokoto, Nigeria’s most senior Islamic traditional leader, following reports of a recent security operation in the northwestern state.

Commentators on social media and some civil society voices allege that a joint operation involving the United States and Nigerian security forces took place in parts of Sokoto State several days ago, reportedly targeting armed extremist groups operating in the area.

According to these claims, the operation resulted in significant casualties among suspected militants. As of press time, Nigerian authorities have not publicly confirmed details of any such operation, and the U.S. government has not issued an on-the-record statement.

The Sultan of Sokoto, widely regarded as the spiritual leader of Nigeria’s Muslim population estimated at over 100 million has also not made a public comment addressing the reports. His silence has drawn sharp criticism from some observers who argue that, given his moral authority, he should speak out against terrorism and violence in the region.

On social media, critics have dubbed him the “Sultan of Silence,” accusing him of failing to condemn extremist violence, including attacks on civilians and allegations of blasphemy-related killings. Others have gone further, questioning whether his lack of public response signals complicity or fear of legal or political repercussions claims for which no evidence has been presented.
Supporters of the Sultan, however, caution against rushing to judgment.

They note that traditional and religious leaders often choose quiet diplomacy over public statements, particularly on sensitive security matters. Some also point out that speaking prematurely on unverified reports could inflame tensions or undermine ongoing security efforts.

A spokesperson for the Sultanate Council declined to comment when contacted by this newspaper, saying only that the Sultan “continues to pray for peace and stability across the country.” Previous statements from the council have emphasized dialogue, interfaith harmony, and cooperation with lawful authorities.

However, Security analysts say the controversy reflects broader public frustration over insecurity in northern Nigeria, where banditry and extremist violence have displaced thousands and strained trust in both government and traditional institutions.

“For many citizens, silence from influential figures is interpreted as indifference,” said one Abuja-based analyst. “But without verified facts, it is also important to avoid turning speculation into accusation.”

As questions continue to circulate, many Nigerians are calling for clearer communication from security agencies about alleged operations, and from moral leaders about their stance on violence, extremism, and the protection of innocent lives. Whether the Sultan will address the controversy publicly remains to be seen.
