Daily Times reporter Idibia Gabriel has been awarded the 2024 African Media Development Foundation (AMDF) Courage in Journalism Award for his bravery and perseverance in journalism.
This prestigious international award was presented to Gabriel at the Sixth Bagauda Kaltho Media Lecture held via Zoom on September 19, 2024.
The lecture’s theme, “Censorship and State Control: Analysis of Impact on African countries with Press Freedom Restrictions,” was discussed by seasoned journalists from across Africa.
Gabriel was previously honored with the “Torch Bearer of Press Freedom Award 2024” by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in May 2024
Gabriel was previously honored with the “Torch Bearer of Press Freedom Award 2024” by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in May 2024. In his acceptance speech, Gabriel dedicated the award to his late father, Idibia A. Achadu, and to all journalists in Kaduna and Nigeria.
He emphasized that journalism is not just a profession for financial gain, but a vital role in safeguarding society from oppression.
Gabriel also stressed the importance of championing press freedom, as it shapes public opinion, empowers people with accurate information, and holds leaders accountable.

The Bagauda Kaltho Memorial Media Lecture Series is organized by the AMDF to honor James Baguada Kaltho, a courageous Nigerian journalist who disappeared in 1996 while performing his duties.
Note that there is another Courage in Journalism Award given by the International Women’s Media Foundation, which honors women journalists who report despite facing incredible odds.
