Jos, Plateau State, August 2nd – Protests in Jos intensified this morning as demonstrators took to the streets to voice their frustrations over soaring fuel, fertilizer, and food prices. The protesters, whose numbers swelled beyond police control, blocked major roads, including the Old Airport roundabout, disrupting traffic and preventing commuters from leaving the state capital.

Chanting demands for affordable food and lower prices, the protest escalated until Prophet Isa El-Buba, a respected religious leader, intervened to calm the crowd. Despite his efforts, the tension remained high, highlighting the severe economic hardship faced by many Nigerians.

“Hunger continues in the country due to the bad governance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” said Samson Gyang, a human rights activist. “The failure of the Nigerian government to abide by policies outlined in Section 2 of the 1999 Constitution could lead to a revolution,” Gyang called on the legislative arm of the government to pass a law guaranteeing the right to food, emphasizing that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure food security for all citizens.

In a separate but related event, Elder Adu Gya, speaking from Miango, delivered a poignant message urging Nigerians to reflect on their actions amidst the ongoing protests. He reminded citizens of Nigeria’s abundant resources and the importance of unity and peace.

“God did not make a mistake in giving us this blessed and fertile nation called Nigeria. Instead of inciting violence, we should focus on making positive changes,” Elder Gya stated. He shared his experience of buying a small local chicken for #4,000.00, illustrating the high cost of living. “Destroying Nigeria means destroying our home. While we often blame our leaders, we must also look at ourselves.”

Elder Gya emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, as permitted by the Nigerian constitution, and condemned any form of violence. “May God give our leaders the spirit of good leadership and protect His children,” he concluded.

In the wake of these events, the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dewan Gabriel has called for immediate government subsidies on fuel, fertilizer, and food prices. He highlighted the urgent need for intervention to alleviate the economic hardships faced by residents of Plateau State.

The Speaker’s statement underscores the growing concerns among Plateau State residents and reflects a broader national issue. The proposed subsidies are seen as essential to provide relief to the constituents and stimulate economic growth. It is hoped that the government will heed this call and implement the necessary measures to support the people of Plateau State during these challenging times.
