Delu Bulus Yakubu Commissions New Rural Health Centre in Shasau Community, Adamawa State

Residents of Shasau in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State now have reason to celebrate after decades without a functional health facility, following the commissioning of a new rural health centre initiated by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Delu Bulus Yakubu.

The community, home to approximately 500 households and with a history spanning over 200 years, previously relied on distant facilities in Garaha, Hong or Garkida, requiring residents to travel more than six kilometres over difficult terrain.

This long journey often endangered lives, especially pregnant women who faced risks such as miscarriages due to poor road conditions and delayed access to medical care.

The commissioning ceremony drew prominent figures who praised the project as a major boost to healthcare delivery in rural areas.

His Royal Highness, the Tol Huba and paramount ruler of Huba Chiefdom, Alheri Bulus Nyako, expressed delight, describing the health centre as the beginning of the restoration of Shasau’s long-overdue status.

“Shasau has a long history and the time has come that the status of Shasau be restored, and what is happening is the beginning of the restoration of Shasau,” Tol Huba Alheri Bulus Nyako stated.

He added that no development is more essential than one that prioritises the health of the people, noting that “health is wealth.” When the health of Shasau residents is properly cared for, he said, they can achieve far more.

The royal father congratulated Mrs Delu Bulus Yakubu for her compassion and love in delivering the project, urging the people of Shasau to patronise and maintain the facility, which aligns with his vision for unity, peace, security, and development in Huba Chiefdom. He announced a personal donation of N500,000 to support its smooth operations.

Dr Sulieman Saidu Bashir, Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, pledged to equip the centre with personnel, medical equipment, wheelchairs, drugs, and mama kits.

He described the inclusion of an ambulance for patient referrals as commendable, saying it would greatly improve healthcare access and the overall wellbeing of residents in the area.

Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, announced plans to sink a borehole at the health centre premises. He described the project as a clear demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to improving the welfare of people in rural and underserved communities.

“Government at all levels are working round the clock to ensure rural dwellers have access to basic medical services,” the Speaker said. He noted that the facility represents more than infrastructure; it symbolises care, compassion, and efforts to combat preventable diseases and reduce child mortality while strengthening the grassroots health system.

Rt. Hon. Wesley assured that the legislature would support policies to enhance healthcare delivery statewide and partner with federal agencies to sustain and replicate such initiatives.

The member representing the Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. James Barka, pledged to supply drugs to the facility within three months, highlighting the critical role of health in the lives of the people.

Mrs Delu Bulus Yakubu explained that the health centre forms part of a national initiative by her office, in line with the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to strengthen rural healthcare services across the country.

Founder of the Being Human Foundation for the Less Privileged, Engr. Dr. Amb. Khadiza Kuburat Ibrahim, commended Mrs Delu Bulus Yakubu for the initiative and promised to partner with her office to further enhance the wellbeing of the people.

Hon. Usman Inuwa Wa’aganda, Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, donated N500,000 for the purchase of drugs, while a modern motorcycle ambulance was provided to facilitate timely referrals of patients to secondary health facilities.

Residents of Shasau and surrounding communities expressed satisfaction with the project, describing it as a significant relief that will address their medical needs and improve quality of life.

The new facility is expected to serve Shasau and neighbouring villages, marking a notable step in the federal government’s efforts to bring quality healthcare closer to rural populations in Adamawa State.
