Women in Nigerian and the world at large have been urged to take their responsibilities seriously as they are the custodians of culture.
The Deputy Speaker Adamawa House of Assembly Hon. Sunday Peter, Member Representing Guyuk Constituency) made the called when Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in partnership with the Protection Sector Working Group (PSWG) UN Women, UNFPA, OCHA, UNHCR conducted an advocacy march to the Adamawa House of Assembly on equal opportunities bill, Child Rights Act and Violence Against Person’s Prohibition Bill.
According to him, without women, there cannot be development, If we don’t carry women along our work here in the assembly amount to nothing.
The Deputy speaker promised that in 2017, the House will look into the three Bills and ensure that by the end of 2017, the gender bills will be passed.
Earlier, the Honourorable Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs Hon. Aliyu Tola Bello disclosed that they have decided to come out because in September, this year, world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly at the “Global Leaders Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’sEmpowerment: A commitment to Action,” made concrete commitments andfirm pledges in order close the gender equality gaps.
Bello, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajia Maisaratu Ahmad Bello maintained that as strategic partners in development, the members of the House of Assembly have the power and responsibility to ensure that gender equality remains a national, state and local government priority, for development to thrive.
“We therefore urged you to pass the Equal Opportunities Bill, Child Rights Act, and Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill, provide significant financing for gender equality, and monitor progress so
that all levels of government will hold themselves and each other accountable for the pledges made towards the development of our people and communities”, He stated
The Commissioner pleaded with the House to help protect women and also bring gender based violence to an end.
