In a bold rebuttal to escalating marital tensions, Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko has taken to social media to dismiss claims by his wife, Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, that he married her when she was 17.
The 67-year-old Delta North lawmaker, in a fiery X post early Thursday, branded her allegations as “cheap lies” and presented her 2019 INEC voter’s card as definitive proof that she was 21 at the time of their 2019 marriage.
Senator Nwoko shared images of the voter’s card, which lists Regina Daniels’ birthdate as October 10, 1998, and a registration date of July 23, 2018.
He recounted their initial meeting, stating, “I asked her age, and she told me she was 21. I asked for a document to support this, and she presented her INEC voter’s card. I have kept it since that day.”
The card, he argues, conclusively shows Regina was 21 when they wed on May 26, 2019, making her 27 today—far from the 17 years she has claimed.
The senator doubled down, accusing Regina of fabricating the underage marriage narrative amid their public separation. He further alleged her claims are influenced by her “current mental condition” and an abandoned rehabilitation program for alleged drug addiction, a charge he has repeatedly leveled against her in recent weeks.
The dispute has sparked a whirlwind of controversy, with conflicting accounts fueling online debates. Regina’s mother, Rita Daniels, previously told the BBC in 2020 that her daughter was nearing 20 in October 2020, suggesting she was 18 at marriage.
However, friends like actress Doris Ogala and activist Omoyele Sowore have countered with claims of a 2001 birthdate, supported by Regina’s passport and birth certificate, which would place her at 17 or 18 during the wedding. These discrepancies have left the public divided, with some questioning the reliability of official documents in Nigeria.
