ECF, NEDC Launch Pilot Project to Empower Adamawa Women

The Environmental Care Foundation (ECF), in partnership with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), has commenced a pilot domestic economic empowerment project at the NEDC state office in Yola, aimed at equipping women with sustainable, home-based income opportunities.

The initiative, implemented under Pillar 10 (Protective Environment) of the NEDC Master Plan, seeks to transform everyday domestic activities into viable economic ventures, enabling women to generate sustainable income within their homes and communities while building household resilience.

Speaking during the project’s rollout, Barrister Khalifa Muhammad Lawan, Adamawa State Coordinator of the NEDC, described the pilot as a strategic integration of economic tree cultivation and vegetable farming with broader livelihood support systems.

“This pilot is carefully designed to improve household income and strengthen community resilience,” Lawan said.

“By situating it at the NEDC state office, we can ensure close supervision, effective monitoring, and proper evaluation before scaling it across communities in the state.”

Founder of the Environmental Care Foundation, Yohana Moses, noted that the partnership offers a practical and replicable model for domestic home empowerment. Participants are currently test-running the initiative under guided conditions to refine the approach.

A land-check monitoring system has been deployed to track crop growth and maintenance, promoting sustainability and accountability.

The pilot features high-value economic trees including blackcurrant, bitter leaf, and Jatropha, as well as vegetables such as okro, spinach, and moringa.

Officials from both organisations stated that lessons and data gathered from this pilot phase will shape the design and implementation of a wider rollout, with the long-term goal of expanding sustainable, home-based livelihood opportunities for women across Adamawa State.

The project underscores a growing focus on environmentally conscious, community-driven solutions to economic empowerment in Nigeria’s North East region.
