EDUCATION IN SHAMBLES: GSS Sugu in Adamawa State Cries Out for Help

The state of Government Secondary School Sugu in Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State has become an alarming crisis, exposing students to deplorable learning conditions. Once a beacon of academic excellence as the former Women’s Teachers College, a renowned institution in the North-Eastern province of Nigeria, the school now stands as a shadow of its former self—decaying, neglected, and overtaken by nature’s wrath.

Hon. Benjamin Brandford, the Labour Party candidate for the upcoming bye-election in Ganye Constituency, has raised an urgent appeal to the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, to intervene and restore dignity to the institution. Lamenting the dire conditions in which students live and learn, Hon. Brandford painted a disturbing picture of abandoned, rotten hostels now infested with reptiles. These young scholars, the supposed future leaders of the nation, are forced to sleep under the open sky during the rainy season, with their classrooms reduced to mere ruins.

The plight of the students has worsened following the displacement of Government Science Secondary School Ganye. Originally housed in a facility that was taken over by the Federal Ministry of Education to establish the Federal Government College Ganye, the students were relocated to the already dilapidated premises of Government Secondary School Sugu. This influx has further strained the meager resources of the school, with both institutions now struggling for survival amid crumbling infrastructure and unsafe conditions.

Hon. Brandford’s call for urgent intervention is not just a political plea but a moral obligation for the government to fulfill its responsibility to education. He acknowledges Governor Fintiri’s commendable efforts in championing educational development across Adamawa State but urges him to extend this commitment to the restoration of Government Secondary School Sugu.

“It is disheartening to see students, who should be in a conducive learning environment, battling against harsh conditions, wild animals, and the forces of nature,” Hon. Brandford stated. “This school has produced prominent Nigerians—Generals in the Nigerian Army, medical doctors, and other accomplished professionals. It is unacceptable that such an institution is left to decay.”

He further called on the Minister of Education to take immediate action, stressing that education is the foundation of national development and must never be neglected. If given the needed attention, Government Secondary School Sugu can reclaim its lost glory, providing a safe and enabling environment for students to thrive.
