Former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, has been arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged financial corruption.

The anti-graft agency arrested Yari on Tuesday and took him to the commission’s Sokoto office, where he was interrogated for hours and later detained.

Yari’s arrest was confirmed by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren. He said the former was questioned for over seven hours before being detained.

A source from the commission said that corruption allegations levelled against Yari was enormous. According to the source, the ex-governor may end up spending up to one week in custody while investigations continues.

The source said, “The cases involving ex-governor Yari are quite enormous and we expect to have him in our custody for one week or more.”

Some of the corruption allegations levelled against Yari include the sum of $56,056.75 reportedly lodged in his account with Polaris Bank; N12.9m, N11.2m, $303m, N217,388.04 and $311.8m said to be kept in different Zenith Bank accounts in the name of Yari and his companies.

Recall that the EFCC in February also grilled Yari in its office in Lagos.

Recall also that a Federal High Court in Abuja in January 2021, ordered a final forfeiture of funds belonging to the former governor domiciled in Zenith and Polaris Banks.
