EFCC Chairman Orders Apology to UUTH Doctor, NMA Over May 12 Incident

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has directed the Commission to issue a formal apology to Professor Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) over the May 12, 2026 incident involving EFCC operatives and hospital staff.

In a statement issued on Monday, the EFCC Chairman expressed regret over the unfortunate episode, which caused discomfort to medical personnel and members of the public at the teaching hospital.

While reaffirming that the wellbeing of Nigerians remains central to the Commission’s mandate, Olukoyede acknowledged the need to address the situation appropriately. He reiterated that a full-scale investigation into the incident has been ordered, promising that any officer found to have acted unprofessionally or outside the Commission’s code of conduct will face appropriate internal disciplinary measures.

“The Commission is determined to work closely with all stakeholders to resolve this matter and prevent any recurrence in the future,” the statement noted.

Olukoyede, however, stressed that the incident would not derail the EFCC’s commitment to discharging its mandate across the country without fear or favour.

He further called on the NMA and other professional bodies to continue supporting the Commission in its efforts to rid Nigeria of economic and financial crimes and other forms of corruption.

The May 12 incident had sparked widespread outrage, with the NMA and other groups demanding accountability from the anti-graft agency.
