According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen emerged from surrounding bushes and launched a sudden assault on a checkpoint within the community. They opened fire sporadically, killing victims on the spot before setting several houses ablaze and fleeing the scene.

Residents described scenes of panic as people fled for safety during the attack. The deceased reportedly included police officers and other security operatives on duty at the time. Six houses were said to have been burned during the incident.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though local sources have linked the violence to ongoing insecurity in the area, including issues related to illegal oil bunkering in the oil-rich region.

Imo State Police Command has increased security presence in the affected area but is yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This latest incident adds to the recurring security challenges in parts of Imo State, where unknown gunmen have carried out similar attacks in recent years. Community leaders have called for enhanced security measures to protect residents.

Further details are expected as police intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
