Ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Idi Hong Dumps PDP for APC, Labels Party a ‘Sinking Ship’

In a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and one-time Minister of State for Health, Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hong made the announcement on Saturday evening in his home ward of Shangui, Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State, surrounded by a large crowd of supporters and political associates. He described his former party as a “sinking ship” and stated that remaining in the PDP would amount to political self-destruction for himself and his followers.

The defection followed extensive consultations with members of his political structure and loyalists across all 21 local government areas of the state.

Hong explained that the PDP’s lack of cohesion and clear direction made it no longer viable for advancing the interests of his supporters or their collective political aspirations.

“I cannot allow myself and my followers to be dragged down by a party that is clearly losing direction,” Hong declared.

He emphasized that his move to the APC was motivated by a commitment to foster development in Adamawa State and Nigeria at large, expressing confidence that the ruling party offers a stronger platform to realize his agenda.

With years of public service experience and fresh ideas, Hong pledged to strengthen the APC and contribute meaningfully to governance.

He directed members of his extensive political network to immediately submit their resignations from the PDP and fully align with the APC, signaling a coordinated grassroots shift to the new party.

Welcoming Hong into the APC fold, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Adamawa, Idris Shuaibu—represented by Hassan Babuto—assured him of equal rights and opportunities within the party.

“In APC, we do not discriminate. By virtue of your registration, you are qualified to contest any position you wish,” Babuto stated.

The APC Chairman in Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Ahmed, also confirmed the development and pledged the party’s full support for Hong in any capacity he chooses to serve. He highlighted the APC’s dedication to inclusive participation and internal democracy.

Babuto further verified that Hong has officially registered with the APC in Shangui Ward, Hong Local Government Area.

This high-profile defection is viewed as part of broader political realignments in Adamawa State, as parties reposition themselves strategically for upcoming electoral battles. Analysts suggest it could signal further movements within the PDP ranks in the state.
