Tragedy struck in Nasarawa State on Monday evening as gunmen abducted Dr. Joseph Haruna Kigbu, a former member of the House of Representatives. The assailants, who fired sporadically, killed Dr. Kigbu’s police escort in a gun battle.
According to eyewitnesses, the abduction occurred around 6 pm between Nunku in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and Gwantu in the Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Local villagers confirmed that the location has been a hotspot for criminal activities over the years.

Dr. Kigbu, a Fellow of the West African College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, represented Lafia/Obi federal constituency, Nasarawa State, at the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015. He practiced as a medical doctor for 34 years and as a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynecologist for over 20 years in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
The Nasarawa State Police Command is yet to comment on the incident, as the Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, was unreachable. This incident is the latest in a series of abductions and killings in Nigeria, highlighting the country’s ongoing security challenges.
