Today, Zaria came alive with joy, color, and a deep sense of unity as former Vice President Arc. Muhammed Namadi Sambo, GCON, was crowned Sardaunan Zazzau by the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli.
The Durbar Hall in the Emir’s Palace buzzed with excitement, packed with people from all walks of life governors, traditional leaders, and everyday folks who gathered to celebrate a man whose life has been a bridge between Nigeria’s past and its future.
The turbaning ceremony wasn’t just a formal event; it felt like a family reunion steeped in history. When the Emir placed the striking red turban on Sambo’s head a symbol of wisdom, leadership, and responsibility the crowd erupted.
Drums echoed, voices chanted “Sardauna! Sardauna!” and you could feel the pride swelling in every corner of the room. This title, Sardaunan Zazzau, carries the weight of legacy, once held by giants like Sir Ahmadu Bello, the revered Sardauna of Sokoto. Now, it’s Sambo’s turn to carry that torch, guiding Zazzau’s cultural and community dreams forward.
Namadi Sambo, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 2010 to 2015 and as Kaduna’s Governor from 2007 to 2010, stood humbly before the crowd.
His voice was calm but full of emotion as he spoke: “This honor isn’t just for me it’s for all of us, for the spirit of our people and the values we hold dear.” Then, with a prayer that touched every heart, he said, “Allah Ya sanya alherinsa, Amin” may God bless this with goodness. The crowd’s thunderous “Amin!” felt like a shared promise, a moment where faith and community intertwined.
Outside, the palace grounds were a sight to behold. Horsemen in vibrant, flowing robes galloped with pride, their horses kicking up dust in a display that screamed northern Nigeria’s rich traditions. The guest list was a who’s-who of Nigeria’s elite governors, ministers, and emirs rubbing shoulders with international guests and local leaders. It was a reminder of Sambo’s reach, not just as a politician but as someone who’s championed peace, education, and progress across borders.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sent warm words through his aide, Bayo Onanuga, calling the title a “fitting tribute” to Sambo’s integrity and heart for service. “He’s shown us what it means to lead with humility,” Tinubu said, encouraging Sambo to keep inspiring the young and working for peace.
The Emir of Zazzau echoed this, his voice full of warmth as he called Sambo a “true son of Zazzau” whose work in schools, roads, and unity has left a mark. “As Sardaunan, he’ll help us hold onto our roots while building a brighter future,” the Emir said, sparking nods and smiles.
The day wasn’t just about speeches—it was a feast for the senses. Hausa poets poured their hearts into verses, and sword dancers moved with a grace that told stories of Zazzau’s past. It was a celebration of culture at a time when Nigeria’s traditions sometimes feel overshadowed by modern life.
