Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, has expressed profound grief over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday following a brief illness.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Monday, Fayemi extended condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, urging collective prayers and support during this time of national mourning. Describing Buhari as a leader of “deep conviction and great tenacity,” Fayemi highlighted the late president’s relentless pursuit of democratic leadership, overcoming multiple electoral setbacks beforewisdom to secure victory in 2015.

“President Buhari’s life was defined by resilience and an unyielding belief in the Nigerian project,” Fayemi said. “His perseverance and the trust of millions led to his victories in 2015 and 2019.” Reflecting on his time working closely with Buhari, including as Minister of Mines and Steel Development and chairman of the 2014 APC Presidential Primary Convention, Fayemi praised Buhari’s transformative impact on Nigeria’s infrastructure.
“His administration’s ambitious projects, from roads to rail revitalization and the Second Niger Bridge, reflect his vision for a future-ready Nigeria,” he noted.
History will be kinder to him than the moment allowed. His commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress never wavered
Acknowledging the economic and security challenges during Buhari’s tenure, Fayemi defended the former president as “a fundamentally good man, often misunderstood, yet driven by a genuine desire to see Nigeria succeed.”
He added, “History will be kinder to him than the moment allowed. His commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress never wavered.” Fayemi called on Nigerians to honor Buhari’s legacy by advancing his vision of a stable, united, and prosperous nation. “His dreams for Nigeria remain unfulfilled, and it is our collective responsibility to build on the foundation he laid,” he said.
“As we mourn, let us also celebrate his life and contributions.” He concluded with prayers for Buhari’s soul and strength for his family and the nation. “May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may God grant us fortitude to bear this loss,” Fayemi said.
