Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Governor of Ekiti State and immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), has joined prominent Nigerians in celebrating former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as one of the nation’s most impactful and enduring statesmen whose legacy of service remains indelible.

In a heartfelt press statement released on Thursday by his media office, Fayemi extended warm congratulations to the elder statesman, who turned 89 on March 5, 2026.
He commended Obasanjo’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, democratic progress, and broader African development over several decades.
“Chief Obasanjo remains a towering figure in Nigeria’s public life and a statesman whose commitment to the unity, stability and progress of our country has been steadfast over the years,” Fayemi stated.
The former governor highlighted Obasanjo’s pivotal roles in Nigeria’s history, including his leadership as military Head of State (1976–1979) and as democratically elected President (1999–2007). These tenures, Fayemi noted, profoundly influenced the country’s political landscape and institutional foundations.
Fayemi also emphasized Obasanjo’s continental influence, pointing to his consistent advocacy for peace, democratic principles, and sustainable development across Africa.
He praised the nonagenarian’s courage, forthrightness, and habit of speaking truth to power qualities that, according to Fayemi, continue to enrich national conversations and bolster Nigeria’s democratic culture.
“As he marks his 89th birthday, I join family members, friends, associates and countless admirers across Nigeria and the world in celebrating a life devoted to service,” Fayemi added. “We remain grateful for his sacrifices and his continuing role as a mentor to many within and outside public life.”
The statement concluded with prayers for God’s continued blessings on Obasanjo, wishing him many more years of good health, wisdom, and strength in his service to Nigeria and humanity.
Obasanjo’s 89th birthday has drawn widespread tributes from across the political spectrum, underscoring his enduring stature as a key architect of modern Nigeria and a respected voice in African affairs.
