FEC Approves Over ₦10bn for Medical Kits and Drugs in Bold Healthcare Push

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has greenlit a landmark investment of over ₦10 billion to procure essential medical kits and drugs, signaling a robust commitment to improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

The approval, announced on Wednesday, aims to bolster access to critical medical supplies, including diagnostic kits for diabetes, antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients, and a range of other vital medications, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader vision for affordable and quality healthcare.

Health Minister Dr. Ali Pate, briefing journalists after the FEC meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, detailed the allocation of ₦10.3 billion for this initiative. Among the key highlights, ₦997 million will fund the procurement of third-line antiretroviral drugs to support HIV patients resistant to standard treatments, a move prompted by shifting global health financing trends toward domestic funding. “This ensures Nigerians can continue the treatment they require,” Dr. Pate emphasized.

In a significant boost to local manufacturing, ₦2 billion has been earmarked for locally produced diabetes diagnostic kits, addressing the rising prevalence of the disease in Nigeria. “Diabetes is a major issue in our country, with many unaware they are affected. For the first time, we’re procuring these kits from a Lagos-based company, unlocking our healthcare value chain,” the minister noted.

These kits, including blood glucose monitoring devices, will be distributed to primary healthcare centers nationwide, with health workers set to receive training for effective deployment.

The FEC also approved ₦4.5 billion for essential medications such as antibiotics, antihypertensives, and anti-diabetic drugs, all sourced from local manufacturers.

This allocation aligns with a medical relief program championed by President Tinubu to reduce healthcare costs for Nigerians. “We’re pooling demand to patronize our local industries, ensuring affordability and availability,” Dr. Pate added.

Further enhancing diagnostic capabilities, ₦2.1 billion will upgrade facilities at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi. The funds will procure a mobile X-ray machine and rehabilitate a 64-slice CT scan, elevating the hospital’s capacity to serve Bauchi and surrounding regions with top-tier clinical care.

The decision has sparked optimism among healthcare stakeholders, with experts lauding it as a timely intervention amid growing health challenges. Patients like Chidi Okonkwo, a diabetes sufferer in Abuja, expressed relief: “This could mean fewer worries about affording my tests and drugs. It’s a big step forward.”

However, questions linger about the program’s sustainability and implementation timeline. Critics have called for transparency in the procurement process and assurances that quality won’t be compromised as the government scales up domestic production. In response, Dr. Pate assured Nigerians of competitive bidding and rigorous oversight.

This latest approval builds on recent health sector investments, including ₦12 billion for diagnostic equipment in February, reflecting a steady push to curb medical tourism and strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure. As the nation watches this ambitious rollout, the FEC’s decision underscores a pivotal moment in the Tinubu administration’s quest to transform lives through accessible healthcare.
