FG Declares June 12, 2026, Public Holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a press release issued on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the Ministry of Interior noted that June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of citizens who worked to entrench democratic governance in the country.

“Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the statement said.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the preservation of democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

The Ministry also assured Nigerians that internal security measures will be strengthened across the country to protect lives and property during the holiday.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged all citizens to use the day for civic reflection, calling on Nigerians to recommit to lawful conduct, responsible engagement, and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister stated.

The press release was e-signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

All government offices, private businesses, and financial institutions are expected to observe the public holiday.
