A horrific suicide bombing rocked Konduga town, 36 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, late Friday night, claiming the lives of at least 24 people and leaving several others injured.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed that a female terrorist detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a bustling local food joint around 10:00 p.m. on June 20, 2025, targeting residents gathered to purchase food.
According to police reports, the powerful explosion tore through the crowded venue, killing 24 men and women instantly. The blast was so intense that only the head of the suicide bomber was recovered, with her body disintegrated by the impact.
An unspecified number of survivors sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical.

A rapid response team, including Military and Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) units, Tactical Teams, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, was deployed to the scene.
The area was secured and thoroughly searched for additional explosive devices, but none were found, allowing authorities to restore normalcy to the town.
The injured were promptly evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where they are receiving medical care. The bodies of the deceased were also taken to UMTH, where medical personnel certified their deaths.

Efforts are underway to identify the victims and release their remains to families for burial in accordance with religious customs.
The police have intensified security measures across Konduga to prevent further attacks, as investigations continue to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The attack underscores the persistent threat of insurgency in the region, leaving the community in mourning and authorities on high alert.
