In a landmark move, the Federal Government has adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university. This development marks a significant milestone in the institution’s history, which was established by the Ogun State Government in 2005.
As Nigeria’s first specialized university of education, TASUED has been a beacon of academic excellence, named after the revered activist and founder of Mayflower School, Dr. Tai Solarin.
With its well-developed infrastructure and academic programs, the transition to a federal institution requires minimal investment from the Federal Government.

President Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, expressing his gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the institution.
The President emphasized that this move honors the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education program in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating Nigerian children.
The takeover is also a tribute to the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a crucial role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012. With TASUED’s new status, the Federal Government now oversees three education universities, including Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo.
This strategic move is expected to bolster teacher education and enhance instructional quality across all educational levels, aligning with the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the nation’s education sector.
