As parts its empowerment programs, the federal government has disbursed five million naira to two hundred and fifty women in Taraba state.
The disbursement of the federal government special grant for rural women was flagged-off Thursday by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sa’adiyya Umar Faruq in Jalingo, the state capital.
Speaking at event, the Minister said that the special cash grant program was introduced in this year 2020 by her ministry as part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration poverty reduction agenda of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.
Represented by the Director Legal Service in the ministry, Barrister Garba Hanawiga, Sa’adiyya said that the program is one of the numerous social intervention of Buhari’s administration aimed at uplifting the most vulnerable groups in the society out of poverty across the country.
According to her, already, the federal government had enrolled 17,803 vulnerables under its conditional cash transfer program in Taraba state.
” Since inception of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2015, the government had paid more attention to producting and promoting the plight of the poor and vulnerable persons in the country.
” This informed the decision to initiate the National Social Investment program and the strategy for enhancing social inclusion of the most vulnerable persons in our communities, which had impacted positively on the lives of the poor and vulnerable people since it’s inception in 2016.” Sa’adiyya said.
She however, informed that the state had received a total payment of N2,83, 96,000 since the inception of the programme in the state, adding that the benefitting LGAs include Ardo Kola, Gassol, Lau, Karim Lamido, Wukaru, Takum, Bali, Ibi, Ussa, Gashaka and Sardauna respectively.
In his remark, Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba who was represented by the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Taninga Binga commended the President for bringing the flagging off of the program to the state, saying that it will go a long way in alleviating poverty among the rural women not only in Taraba but the country at large.
Ishaku called on the beneficiaries to make good used of the money for the purpose intend and also thanked the Humanitarian Affairs Minister for the gesture.
Earlier in a welcome address, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Child Development, Hauwa Kwena described the gesture as complementary and timely and thanked the federal government for its determination toward alleviating poverty among Nigerian women.
Some of the beneficiaries in an interview, Madam Sisilia Ishaya and Zainab Musa who could not hide their excitement pray that God should reward the President in abundance and promised to start up a business with cash received.
A sum of N20,000 were given to the two hundred and fifty women each.
