The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a comprehensive national farmers’ registry that will capture critical data including farm sizes, locations, and traceability details of agricultural produce.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this during an event in Maiduguri, Borno State, where farming equipment was distributed to smallholder farmers, vulnerable groups, and farmers’ associations.
Kyari explained that the registry, to be developed in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), will serve as a centralized platform to accurately identify and verify farmers across the country.
“This database will enable us to know exactly who our farmers are, the size of their farms, and the location of their operations,” the Minister said. “It will also ensure full traceability of agricultural produce from farm to market.”
He emphasized that the initiative will create a reliable framework for targeting government interventions, subsidies, and support programs to genuine farmers.
“The registry will serve as a window for the ministry to properly evaluate and channel assistance to those who truly need it,” Kyari added.
As part of efforts to enhance productivity and reduce input costs, the Ministry distributed assorted farming equipment to beneficiaries in Borno State.
Kyari noted that the support is aimed at boosting food production, improving livelihoods, and strengthening agricultural resilience in the North East region.
Stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing the farmers’ registry as a game-changer for transparency, food security planning, and efficient resource allocation in Nigeria’s agriculture sector.
The registration process is expected to commence soon, with modalities to be announced in the coming weeks.
