Finance Ministry Is Engine Room of Nigeria’s Economy – Jafiya

The outgoing Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Lydia Jafiya, has described the ministry as the engine room of the nation’s economy, stressing its critical role in sustaining national stability.

Jafiya made the remark on Friday in Abuja during her retirement and handover ceremony, noting that any error or disunity within the ministry could have far-reaching effects on the wider society.

“Finance has always been at the top of its affairs. We must not drop the ball,” she said, urging management and staff to remain united and professional in the discharge of their duties.

She called on directors and staff of the ministry to extend full support to the new Permanent Secretary, Mr. Raymond Omachi, whom she described as a committed and capable leader.

Reflecting on her career, Jafiya said she had served in various ministries before concluding her service in the Ministry of Finance, which she described as one of the best professional homes she could have wished for.

“I am leaving with a grateful heart, acknowledging the support of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Minister of State, Dr. Doris Anite,” she said.

The outgoing permanent secretary commended the directors and staff for their high level of collaboration and esprit de corps, noting that their teamwork made challenges surmountable. She also praised the media for fairness and professionalism, saying positive reportage contributed to the ministry’s image and effectiveness.

“A word from the media can make or mar an institution. Thank you for standing by us,” she said.

Jafiya further lauded the unions for their commitment to staff welfare and urged them to continue prioritising workers’ interests, while calling for sustained support for her successor.

In his remarks, the new Permanent Secretary, Mr. Raymond Omachi, described Jafiya as a great leader who built a strong and committed team of directors. He pledged to build on the foundation she laid and sustain the values of professionalism and teamwork within the ministry.

Omachi also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and the Minister of Finance for the opportunity to serve.

All directors of the ministry were present at the ceremony and commended Jafiya for her dedication, leadership, and commitment to staff welfare throughout her tenure.
