Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has once again harvested fresh vegetables from the State House garden, using the occasion to renew her appeal to Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a practical solution to food security, healthy living and environmental sustainability.

The flourishing garden, established about two years ago as part of her #EveryHomeAGarden initiative, continues to yield an abundance of vegetables and serves as a model for households across the country. The initiative was launched to encourage citizens to cultivate food crops at home and contribute to the national drive for food security.
During a routine visit to the garden for another round of harvesting, the First Lady displayed an impressive collection of freshly picked vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin, highlighting the benefits of growing food within the home environment.
Speaking after the harvest, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that maintaining a home garden is not only cost-effective but also promotes healthier lifestyles by providing families with access to fresh and nutritious produce.
According to her, home gardening offers a simple but impactful way for Nigerians to supplement household food supplies while reducing dependence on market purchases amid rising economic pressures.
Beyond food production, the First Lady noted that home gardens can play a meaningful role in addressing environmental challenges. She explained that increased cultivation of plants and vegetables around homes contributes to climate change mitigation efforts by enhancing green spaces and supporting sustainable living practices.
Mrs. Tinubu also used the occasion to encourage a culture of generosity and community support. After the harvest, she shared part of the produce with members of her staff, urging Nigerians to extend kindness to others whenever possible.
The continued success of the Villa garden underscores the message behind the #EveryHomeAGarden campaign—that even small spaces can be transformed into productive gardens capable of improving nutrition, strengthening food security and fostering self-reliance.
As Nigeria continues to pursue agricultural development and food sufficiency, the First Lady’s thriving garden remains a visible example of how individual households can contribute to the nation’s broader food security goals while promoting healthier and more sustainable communities.
