FLOOD: Adamawa Assembly Seeks Relief Materials for Victims in Shelleng, Other LGAs

The Adamawa State House of Assembly has passed resolutions mandating the Adamawa State Government and council chairmen of Shelleng, Guyuk, Numan, Demsa, and Lamurde to provide emergency relief materials to victims of flood in Shelling and other local government areas affected by the flood.

The house also directed its relevant standing committees to liaise with state ministries of Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture, and federal authorities concerned to provide lasting solutions to the Issue of floods across the state.

The house resolutions followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing the Shelleng constituency in the seventh assembly, Hon. Abubakar Isa on Tuesday, on the recent flood disaster in Shelling town on August 8 which destroyed houses, farmlands, food items, livestock, and other valuables.

He explained that the major causes of the flood which among others include the overflowing of river Gongola, Daɗin Kowa Dam, management of Kiri Dam, and the collapse of the river embankments in Shelleng.

The lawmaker prayed the House to pass resolutions and mandate relevant authorities to provide the victims with emergency assistance, especially building materials, food items, and beddings, and to assist to relocate those affected to safer sites and reconstruct River Gongola embankments in the Shelleng constituency.

The deputy speaker and member representing Numan Hon. Pwamakeino Mackondo, his counterparts of Lamurde Hon. Mandala Barna, Hon. Adwawa Donglock of Guyuk and Hon. Mrs. Kate Raymond Mamuno of Demsa, speaking on the existing order, said flood is one of the major problems of people of their constituencies, especially those residing in riverine areas.

Others who contributed to the matter of urgent public importance were raised by members representing Shelling Hon. Abubakar Isa, where Rt. Hon. Kabiru Mijinyawa of Yola South and Abdullahi Umar Yapak of Verre constituencies explained that most parts of the state are experiencing flooding during the rainy season, including the state capital.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the attitude of some people who are building their houses, shops, and filling stations on waterways, especially around the Chochi irrigation site along Yola road.

Thereafter Speaker of the house Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, mandated the house standing committees to liaise with relevant ministries and agencies to proffer lasting solutions.

He, therefore, directed the Clerk of the house to communicate the resolution to other appropriate authorities for emergency action.
