The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has marked its 20th anniversary, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the founder of the institution, expressing his pride and gratitude for the milestone.
In his speech, Abubakar reflected on the university’s journey, from its humble beginnings to its current status as a vibrant educational hub with seven schools and nearly thirty diverse degree programs. He acknowledged the dedication and commitment of everyone who has contributed to the university’s success.
Abubakar also honored the memory of Alhaji Ahmed Joda, the late Pioneer Chairman of the AUN Board, who played a crucial role in shaping the university’s foundations.

He expressed gratitude to the American University Washington DC, particularly late Professor Robert Pastor and Emeritus Dean Louis Goodman, for providing the intellectual foundation for setting up the university.
Looking to the future, Abubakar emphasized the need for the university to remain sustainable. He proposed diversifying funding sources through alumni engagement, corporate partnerships, grant opportunities, continuing education programs, research funding, fundraising events, and endowment funds.
Abubakar also stressed the importance of introducing agricultural studies, given the sector’s significance in the local economy. He urged the Board and Governing Council to source funding for the establishment of a School of Agriculture.
The former Vice President reiterated the university’s commitment to its American identity and the principles of academic rigor, intellectual freedom, and excellence.
He emphasized the need for community engagement, developing a responsive curriculum, focusing on sustainable development, promoting entrepreneurship, harnessing technology, and establishing interdisciplinary research centers.
In closing, Abubakar expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the university’s journey and looked forward to the next chapter of success, sustainability, and transformative impact at the American University of Nigeria.
