G7 Leaders Back Trump’s Iran Deal, Shift Spotlight to China’s Grip on Critical Minerals

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have endorsed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s diplomatic engagement with Iran, describing it as a significant step toward easing tensions in the Middle East, while simultaneously raising concerns over China’s growing dominance of critical mineral supply chains.

The issue dominated discussions at the ongoing G7 Summit, where world leaders sought to address pressing geopolitical and economic challenges confronting advanced economies.

According to officials familiar with the deliberations, participants welcomed what they described as a renewed diplomatic breakthrough with Iran, viewing it as a potential pathway to reducing instability across the Middle East and lowering the risk of wider regional conflict.

The endorsement comes amid heightened international concern over security developments in the region, with G7 leaders emphasizing the need for sustained diplomatic engagement to promote peace and stability.

However, attention quickly shifted from Middle East diplomacy to what many leaders described as an equally urgent strategic challenge — China’s overwhelming control of global supplies of critical minerals.

The minerals, including rare earth elements and other essential resources, are vital components in the production of semiconductors, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, telecommunications equipment, and advanced defence systems.

Several G7 leaders warned that excessive dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains poses significant economic and national security risks, particularly as global competition intensifies in emerging technologies and clean energy industries.

Diplomatic sources said the issue has now emerged as a top priority on the G7 agenda, with member nations exploring coordinated measures to reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Among the proposals under consideration are increased investments in domestic mining and processing industries, support for alternative mineral extraction projects, and the development of strategic partnerships with resource-rich countries outside China’s sphere of influence.

Trade ministers attending the summit also discussed mechanisms for deeper cooperation among G7 countries to secure stable access to critical raw materials and reduce the risk of future supply disruptions.

China currently plays a dominant role in the mining, processing, and refining of many of these materials, giving Beijing significant influence over supply chains that are increasingly central to global economic growth and technological innovation.

The discussions reflect a broader effort by Western nations to diversify sources of strategic resources and reduce exposure to geopolitical risks associated with concentrated supply chains.

While leaders expressed optimism over diplomatic progress involving Iran, summit observers said the debate over critical minerals underscored the growing recognition that economic security has become inseparable from national security in an increasingly competitive global landscape.

As the summit continues, G7 nations are expected to further refine proposals aimed at strengthening energy security, supply chain resilience, and economic cooperation while navigating complex geopolitical challenges across multiple regions.
