Russia has declared it is “closely monitoring” developments surrounding unconfirmed reports of potential United States military action in Nigeria, urging all parties to adhere strictly to international law.
During a regularly scheduled press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova addressed the issue directly, emphasizing restraint and legal compliance.
“We are closely monitoring the situation regarding reports of possible US military actions in Nigeria,” Zakharova said. “We call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms and to resolve any issues through diplomatic channels.”
The statement comes amid heightened speculation in diplomatic and security circles about increased US interest in West African counterterrorism operations, particularly in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against insurgent groups in the northeast.
While neither the US Department of Defense nor the Nigerian government has officially confirmed any new military initiatives, regional analysts point to recent high-level visits by American defense officials and joint training exercises as possible precursors to expanded cooperation.
Zakharova’s remarks reflect Russia’s growing assertiveness in African affairs, where Moscow has expanded military and economic ties in recent years, including arms deals and private security contracts in several countries.
