The Adamawa state governor, Muhammed Umaru Jibrilla Bindow has condemned the recent attacks by herdsmen that resulted in the loss of lives and the displacement of thousands from communities in the border towns of Adamawa and Taraba.
Governor Jibrilla described the killings as a set back to the progress and developmental strides of the state.
Jibrilla made the remarks in a press statement signed by the Adamawa state commissioner for information and strategy, Ahmed Sajoh, and made available to Newsmen, Thursday, in Yola, Adamawa state.
The statement saud, “Senator Muhammad Umar Jibrilla Bindow has condemned in strong terms the recent attacks on Bujum-Kona, Sabon Layi and Bujum-Yashi communities in Demsa and Numan and Kola in Guyuk Local government Areas.
“Government cannot continue to condone such acts capable of undermining the peace of the State and scuttling the development efforts of the State Government.”
Jibrilla said, ” The spill-over effects of the crisis in Bujum-Center in Taraba State has equally resulted in an influx of Internally Displaced Persons in both Gorobi in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area and Kpasam in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
“This has exacerbated the Humanitarian situation facing the state as a result of the Insurgency and earlier attacks in the State.
“Governor Muhammad Umar Jibrilla has seriously frowned at the spate and frequency of the attacks and vows to mobilise all resources to ensure that the situation is brought to a halt as soon as possible.”
In response to the crisis, the Governor has directed the Deputy Governor to convene an urgent Security Council meeting to ensure swift and prompt deployment of Security Forces to the affected Areas.
Governor Muhammad Umar Jibrilla Bindow has also directed the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency ADSEMA and the Commissioner for Health to ensure the immediate delivery of Food, non-food items and necessary medications to the affected communities.
“Initial deliveries to Guyuk has already been effected while those of Gorobi and Kpasam will take place in the early hours of Thursday 12th July, 2018.
“Muhammad Umar Jibrilla Bindow has called on the people of Adamawa State to embrace peace and peaceful coexistence as the only option for the progress and development of the State,” the statement said.
The Governor equally commiserates with all the people of the affected communities and calls on the families of those who lost their lives to bear the irreparable loss while praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed. Governor Bindow equally commends the benevolent spirit and resilience of the communities providing shelter to displaced persons.
Following the emergency security council meeting held by the state government with the security chiefs in the state, the security chiefsDuring assures of taking the necessary steps to contain the situation.
They also assured that an additional combined team of the Army, Police and Civil Defence will move to the area immediately in order to secure the affected communities and protect civilians particularly Internally Displaced Persons and that all other security measures as well as intelligence gathering will be intensified.
