Gov Okpebholo Offers Amnesty to Cultists in Edo State

In a groundbreaking move aimed at restoring peace and security, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Wednesday, announced a comprehensive amnesty program for cultists operating within the state.

The initiative, unveiled during a state-wide address at the Government House in Benin City, seeks to address the rising tide of cult-related violence that has plagued communities across Edo State.

Governor Okpebholo, who assumed office in November 2024, emphasized that the amnesty program is a critical step toward fostering reconciliation and reducing crime. “Our administration is committed to the safety and well-being of every Edo citizen. We are extending an olive branch to those involved in cultism to renounce their ways, surrender their weapons, and embrace peace,” he stated.

The amnesty offer comes amid growing concerns over cult clashes in areas like Ekiadolor, Okhuesan, and parts of Benin City, which have led to loss of lives and property.

Official data from the Edo State Police Command indicates that cult-related incidents accounted for over 30% of violent crimes in the state in 2024. The governor’s initiative is seen as a proactive measure to tackle this menace head-on.

Under the terms of the amnesty, cultists who voluntarily surrender their arms within a 60-day window will receive immunity from prosecution, access to rehabilitation programs, and opportunities for skill acquisition to aid their reintegration into society. The governor also announced the establishment of a task force to oversee the disarmament process and ensure transparency.

He also warned that security agencies would intensify efforts to apprehend those who reject the amnesty and continue criminal activities.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Community leader Chief Osaro Idemudia praised the governor’s approach, calling it “a bold and compassionate step toward healing our communities.”

However, some residents, like Mercy Osagie, a trader in Ekiadolor, expressed skepticism, stating, “We’ve seen programs like this before. The government must ensure it’s not just talk but leads to real change.”

The amnesty program is part of Governor Okpebholo’s broader agenda to address insecurity, unemployment, and social unrest in Edo State. Analysts suggest that its success will depend on robust implementation, community engagement, and sustained government support for rehabilitation efforts.

As the 60-day amnesty period begins, all eyes are on Edo State to see if this bold initiative will turn the tide against cultism and pave the way for lasting peace.
