Popular Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said that the gang of bandits that kidnapped Zamfara schoolgirls were different from the group he recently had a meeting with inside a forest in Zamfara.

FirstNews reported earlier that bandits stormed Government Secondary School Jangebe in Talata Mafara Local Government Area and abducted over 300 female students.

In reaction to this, Gumi told The Nation that the abduction was carried out by a splinter group of the Zamfara bandits he knew.

“They are not the ones that abducted the girls. It is a splinter group,” he said.

On whether he would meet with the group that kidnapped the schoolgirls, Gumi said “maybe”.

The Islamic scholar has been advocating and calling on the Nigerians government to grant amnesty to the bandits. He argued that doing that remained the panacea for peace to reign.
