Adamawa State house of assembly has passed two resolutions directing the management of the Adamawa State University ADSU Mubi, to establish a study center in Guyuk local government area of the state.
The resolutions followed a motion under matters of urgent public importance raised on the floor of the house by the Deputy Chief Whip of the House and member representing Guyuk constituency, Mr. Adwawa Donglock.
The lawmaker who is the chairman house standing committee on public petition, public service and electoral matters, said that education needs to be brought closer to the people to embrace learning.
Dongolok told his colleagues that many students have been completing secondary schools in his constituency without a study center that will prepare them for studies in higher institutions.
According to him, lack of the center has adversely affected the people as most of them could not afford to travel long distances in pursuit of education due to paucity of funds.
The legislator added that the centre will not only bring succour to applicants from Guyuk and environs, it will also encourage unity and coexistence among the diverse communities, create employment, boost economy of the community and generate revenue for the government.
He said that the tertiary institutions had in the past years embarked on the establishment of study centres in some parts of the state, adding that the singular gesture had helped in boosting the educational development of the benefiting communities.
He urged his colleagues to rally round the motion to ensure the establishment of the centre in Guyuk.
Speaking on the motion, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Yapak of Verre constituency, described the motion as timely as it will address the difficulties being faced by the constituents most especially from going to state polytechnic campus in Numan and other places to study or carry out research.
While contributing, Hon. Abubakar Isa, member representing Shelleng constituency, the neighboring local government of the requested study centre, stated that their people have been yearning for campus or study centre in the area for quite sometime, insisting that anything sited in Guyuk, his constituents will benefit from it.
Other lawmakers who contributed on the debate including members representing Numan, Jada Mbulo, Hon. Hong, Song, and Gombi Constituencies supported the motion and urged the house to grant the request of their colleague.
The house then directed its standing committees on education and tertiary institution to liaise with the ministry of higher education as well as the committee on legislative compliance to ensure the implementation of the resolution
Thereafter the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon Aminu Iya Abbas, directed the clerk to communicate the resolutions to Governor Fintiri, ministry for higher and professional education and ADSU for implementation of the resolution passed.
