In a recent press briefing, Comrade Elliott Afiyo, the national president of the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF), has voiced concerns over what he alleges to be a secret plot by the Tinubu-led government to raise fuel pump prices and remove electricity subsidies.
According to Afiyo, these actions could exacerbate the existing hardships faced by Nigerians.
Expressing dismay at the current state of the economy and heightened security challenges, Afiyo emphasized the potential consequences of such decisions, suggesting they might push Nigerians to take matters into their own hands.
In the statement made available to Rendezvous, he called for the reversal of these decisions within three days, starting from February 20, 2024.
Afiyo criticized the government’s handling of security issues, particularly in the Northern part of the country, citing the increased activities of Boko Haram, bandits, and kidnappers.
Despite the expectations associated with the Renewed Hope Agenda, Afiyo expressed disappointment at the apparent escalation of criminal activities without adequate government response.
Highlighting the boldness of criminal elements and their perceived influence over security matters, Afiyo called on the Federal Government to take decisive actions against perpetrators and collaborators within the security agencies. Failure to do so, he warned, could lead to citizens taking their destinies into their own hands.
Addressing the economic challenges, Afiyo drew attention to the rising prices of basic necessities, asserting that essential food items have become unaffordable for the common man.
He urged wealthy Northerners to initiate palliative measures in their communities to mitigate negative reactions.
In a cautionary note, Afiyo advised Northern leaders against using extravagant vehicles, linking such displays to the prevailing economic hardships. He warned that failure to adhere to this advice might result in unforeseen consequences.
