Harsh economy:10,000 Anglican worshipers pray over recession

No fewer than 10,000 Anglican faithful across Anambra state converged on Awka at the weekend on a prayer rally for God’s intervention over the economic recession and other challenges confronting the state and the nation.

The rally, held at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square by the nine dioceses that make up the Province of the Niger in the Anglican Communion, attracted bishops, other leaders, members of the church, and government functionaries.

Speaking at the event, the bishop of Mbamiri Diocese, Rt. Rev. Henry Okeke, said, “We need to use prayers where our powers cannot reach.’’

Earlier in his speech, the Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, urged Christians not to lose hope in the face of the economic recession, but to anchor their faith in God who is able to see them through.

Obiano, who was represented by the Head of Service, Harry Udu, said,  “The present economic recession, the increased kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities in the country have brought untold hardship to the people. If there is anything the state and indeed the country needs now, it is prayers.”
