Heavy Security Presence at PDP Secretariat as NEC Meeting Holds Today

A heavy security presence has been deployed at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Abuja ahead of the scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting today, June 30, 2025. The security deployment is reportedly aimed at preventing the proposed NEC Expanded Caucus Meeting.

The PDP is currently embroiled in a deepening crisis, with two factions of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) holding parallel meetings and issuing conflicting statements.

One faction, led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, has announced an expanded caucus meeting, while another group, led by Deputy National Chairman (South) Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, insists that the NEC meeting will proceed as scheduled.

According to reports, the Damagum-led faction has the support of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while the Arapaja-led group is backed by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. The crisis has sharply divided the party’s key organs, including the NWC, the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the governors’ forum, into two factions.

The Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has thrown his weight behind the Arapaja-led NWC, stating that he fully supports the NEC meeting scheduled for today. Mbah expressed frustration with the “shenanigans” that have turned the PDP into an “endless circus”.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are urging calm and dialogue to resolve the impasse. The PDP’s crisis has significant implications for the party’s future and its chances in the 2027 general elections.
