Hong: Traditional Ruler Warns Adamawa Youth on the dangers of smoking

Children in Hong district of Hong local government area of Adamawa State have been reminded on the need to stay away from tobacco smoking as it will affects their health.

The District Head of Hong and Danmalikin Adamawa, Alh. Babangida Umar Mahmoud (Khadimul Qur’an) gave the reminder Saturday during an interactive session with Ward and Village Heads as well as other stakeholders in the district.

The session aimed to create awareness on the dangers associated with smoking was organized by Njir Hoba Multipurpose Cooperative Group known as “Njir Hoba”and sponsored by Dr. Habu Salihu Magaji (Yaduma Hong) and Abubakar Jadas, Dean College of Technical and Vocational Education, Kaduna Polytechnic.

The District Head who was represented by Yaduma Hong, Dr. Habu Salihu Magaji stated that parents and guardians should not shy away from their responsibility of educating their children on health hazards associated with tobacco smoking which affects the brain an engine room of the body.

He noted that smoking has numerous effects on children as it denied them from attending schools and acquiring skills to make them responsible members of the society, and blamed some parents and guardians for lack of monitoring the movements of the children and their associates.

Danmalikin Adamawa explained that the programme is in line with the philosophy of the district that every two to three months it organized a session with stakeholders to appraise the behavioural pattern of children as it relates to smoking and other issues with a view to tackle them.

In their contributions, the Village head of Thabu, Alh Ishaku Mohammed Ezra and Alh Mahmudu Abdulkadir Midala Gari Hong reiterated the need for parents and guardians to always scrutinize peer groups of their children so as not fall prey into the hands of bad eggs.

They vowed to continue with awareness in their domain on dangers associated with any kind smoking by using the slogan on the Tobacco Cigarettes which says “Smokers are liable to die young.”
