In a heartfelt celebration of the International Day of Education, the Hope and Rural Aid Foundation (HARAF) has brought to light the pressing theme of this year: “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in the World of Automation.” This initiative emphasizes the necessity of integrating artificial intelligence into educational systems while ensuring that human agency remains paramount in shaping future generations.

As artificial intelligence increasingly permeates classrooms and educational tools, it brings forth a myriad of opportunities for personalized learning, efficiency, and innovative teaching methodologies. However, HARAF advocates for a balanced approach, stressing the importance of human-centric education amidst these technological advancements.

Education is fundamentally for the human, not for machines

“Education is fundamentally for the human, not for machines,” stated Dr. Sarah Nwosu, HARAF’s Director of Educational Programs. “While AI can undoubtedly enhance the learning experience, we must prioritize critical thinking, creativity, and ethical considerations to preserve the intrinsic value of human input and decision-making.”

HARAF’s celebration serves as a poignant reminder of the necessity to cultivate an educational environment where technology serves as a complement—rather than a replacement—to human capabilities. The foundation emphasizes that learners should remain active and empowered participants in their educational journeys, harnessing the potential of AI as a powerful learning tool akin to traditional instruments like books and pens.

We envision an education system that integrates both machine and non-machine learning tools, empowering our population to thrive in a rapidly changing world

In light of this theme, HARAF is advocating for a transformative educational system that equips individuals with practical knowledge, fostering innovation and productivity within communities. “We envision an education system that integrates both machine and non-machine learning tools, empowering our population to thrive in a rapidly changing world,” Dr. Nwosu added.

The International Day of Education is a global initiative recognized by the United Nations, aimed at promoting the importance of education in achieving sustainable development. HARAF’s commitment to this cause resonates deeply, highlighting the need for a collaborative effort in shaping an educational landscape that nurtures human potential while embracing the advancements of technology.

The future of education must prioritize human agency, ensuring that as we integrate AI into the learning process

As the world continues to evolve toward automation, HARAF’s message is clear: the future of education must prioritize human agency, ensuring that as we integrate AI into the learning process, the essence of what it means to be human remains at the core of educational experiences.
